If you are living in a house of considerable size, it is likely that you have a central air conditioning unit installed. That is the one that has the best chance of distributing the air around the home evenly and getting it there with the most efficiency. Of course, it is much more expensive than using window units, on average, and takes more comprehensive maintenance to continue working properly as time progresses. The principle behind central air is that it is going to take air from the exterior of your home and process it through a condenser and a compressor and then send it through something called the evaporator coil, which takes the heat out of the air and drops the temperature considerably. Then it is handled on the inside and distributed through a series of air ducts, which can go to any area of the home. They could, in fact, be found anywhere, and certainly will be seen in every bedroom, as well as the living room, kitchen and dining room. Air will blow through the wall, ceiling or floor. It circulates back into the system after it gets warm through the return duct, and the cycle starts over again. And you are not going to hear very much at all, at least on the inside. The part of the unit that is located outside could make quite a bit of noise. Nonetheless, when your central air system is operating at its best level of efficiency, it is going to provide seamless comfort for you and your family. Just set the thermostat for the temperature you want, and if you have a thermostat that is programmable, that’s even better, as you can pre-set the temperatures according to the times of the day. For example, it can be programmed higher at night, when the weather outdoors is usually cooler. As we mentioned, the type of central air system that is most prevalent is that which contains a “package” on the outside; that is, one which includes the compressor, the condenser and the evaporator coil. There would be a furnace that is separate in order to provide heat, if that is the way the home owner elected to go. Sometimes, however, you’ll see some of the apparatus located on the inside of the house, usually in the same place as, say, a heat pump. This is known as a split system. Either way, a top-notch HVAC professional can install a central air conditioner that is customized to meet your home’s specific needs.
