Check the salt level.<\/strong> Every four to six weeks or so, make it a point to check the salt level in the brine tank–don\u2019t wait for signs that your water softener isn\u2019t working properly. Put a reminder on your calendar or set one on your phone to peek into the brine tank as often as necessary. Keep the salt level at half full or less.<\/p>\n

Use the salt recommended for your water softener. There are two types of salt used for water softeners: cubes and crystals. Instead of assuming which type your water softener needs, read the user\u2019s manual. You can use an object such as a broom handle to break up a salt bridge. However, if you allow salt bridges to develop in the first place, they’ll continue to occur. It\u2019s best to have a professional inspect your water softener to keep this from happening.<\/p>\n

Clean the brine tank.<\/strong> Modern water softeners are great because they don\u2019t require frequent cleaning. However, cleaning your brine tank every six to 12 months will go a long way in keeping your equipment properly functioning for a long time.<\/p>\n

Help your equipment with a pre-filter.<\/strong> Pre-filtration will limit the sludge and sediments that find their way into your water softener. A good filter will also remove chlorine from the water.
